Heritage Days

Heritage Days is the Sunday after Labor Day every year. The Booster club in our town hosts this event to raise money for the upkeep of the park, as well as scholarships for recent graduates and a fun Christmas Party with Santa. The day is themed around small town life from years ago. There are booths with crafts, a quilt showing in the community building, a country band, and a hot meal is served. This just may be the best fried chicken around and many agree. People drive for miles to come get a plate of chicken, mashed taters, corn, green beans, rolls and homemade desserts. The line is an hour long at times, and everyone leaves with a full tummy.

The day is a lot of work for the booster club. Sharon and othe women run the meal, while George and his crew of fellow HPers clean and fry chicken all day.

This was the 1st year, Jay was able to particiapte in events. There are 8 old time races, with 4 heats for ages 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 and 13 and over. Ribbons and cash are awared to places 1st-3rd of each heat, and all winners are listed in the paper. Fortunately for us, Aunt Sara is the ring leader of this fun event, so let Jay sneak in as a 3 yr old. AND what a guy he was. Lil' Aaron and Jay warmed up and practiced for the wheel barrow race, and whipped quite a few older boys, placing 2nd. Carson was the only one ahead of them. I was so excited. I was cheering and jumping, I'm sure other parents wanted to choke me. OH WELL! Jay was proud enough of this win, he didn't particiapte in any more races, but we have started training for next year!

Below Jay and Aaron talking smack to their competitors.

Jay and Carson showing off their prizes for 1st and 2nd place in the wheel barrow race. The boys, as well as all the other winners, even made it into the local county paper. Gotta love small towns. Jay's 2nd place earned him a ribbon, 2 dollars and a big kiss and cheer from mom.

George, the MASTER chicken fryer. Can you see the resemblance between Scott and his father? Mid chew poses all day.

What a face. I kept trying to get a shot of the chicken fryers. Scott and Danny were not in any kind of mood for me. Tough, memories is what this is, damn it! :)

Below is a local band, that has been playing for years. It is so fun to listen to and watch the older generations sing and dance. I hope that when I am up in the years, I am doing the same thing- dancing and having fun!
